Save points

Save points are an important feature in the first four games of the series, as they are used to create and edit save files, as well as for saving pictures taken into albums. In Fatal Frame V, save points are removed in favour of automatic saving at checkpoints.

Fatal Frame

The save points in the first game are a plain camera mounted onto a stand. This camera glows blue most of the time but will change to red and be unusable if a spirit is nearby. On the Final Night in the Xbox version, in Fatal difficulty, the player is not allowed to save their game.[1]

Fatal Frame II / Deep Crimson Butterfly

In the second game and the remake for Wii, the save point is a square lantern, with red butterflies on each side. The lantern will go out and be unusable if there is a vanishing ghost or hostile spirit nearby.

Fatal Frame III

In the third game, the save points are blue lanterns with a blue flame design on each side. The lantern will go out and be unusable if there is a vanishing ghost or hostile spirit nearby.

The Camera Obscura on Rei Kurosawa's desk also serves as a secondary save point when she is awake in the real world.

Fatal Frame IV

In Fatal Frame IV, the save points are large yellow lanterns that give off a faint glow. The lantern will go out and be unusable if there is a hostile spirit nearby. During the game, players may use the lantern's exchange/shop (交換) to purchase items (such as herbal medicine or film) using accumulated points.

It is also possible for the player to save their game at any time by accessing the menu and selecting the save option.

Misc Info

  • The save points in the last three games match the image colour of each game.
  • In Fatal Frame, the save point can be used to reload your camera up to a maximum of thirty shots of Type 14 film.
