How do you see the camera obscura? I know most people that are turned away from the game say that the camera is a stupid/weird function of gameplay. I personally enjoy it a lot and I think having to get up close and personal with the ghosts increases the fear factor. How do you think the games would've worked if there wasn't the camera? What do you think would have been used in place of it? There is so much in the games that revolves around the camera that I think it would be a completely different game. Do you think it would have been as popular? Would you still enjoy the games without the camera?

Also, do you think the japanese stereotype of liking photography played a big role in shaping the first game to include the camera? What if the game had the excorcism papers that Shibata had talked about in an interview about the first game?

Kikuchi at first wanted all kinds of other things as weapons like ofuda, a magical spear, a bow, a vacuum cleaner was even brought up (jokingly, I hope)... but Shibata was the one who wanted to do the camera, I think due to an experience he says he had as a kid, and a big part of this was because they wanted people to have to get up close to the ghost, rather than running away from the object of their fear and miss it all. So yes, it's hugely important in the kind of game it turned out to be. You can't just run away from the enemy like in most other games; you have no choice but to directly go after the absolute scariest thing there is. Which I do think makes a big difference.

 

It's also infinitely preferable to some of their other ideas, such as this "gem"...

 

Later, we also rewrote a game system with a "scream" button, which you could press when you'd accumulated enough fear, and it would temporarily drive away ghosts. But it was absolutely awful.

 

Imagine how bad that would be.
