Strobe lighting and the scent of musty old books rises from within the fog...
Eisenalex : (16 August 2018 - 02:07 PM) 8 and 10 were my favourites. 10 mostly because I love Choushirous storyline so much.
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:09 PM) As much as I dislike the flashlight, I'm kinda anxious to play his chapter. I wanna know how his story ends up. As long as the kid's school stuff doesn't take too long, hoping to knock out chapter 9 tonight!
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:09 PM) My mind is still stuck on the end of chapter 8 though... Misakiiiiii T_T
Eisenalex : (16 August 2018 - 02:11 PM) I know what you mean. What I disliked the most about the flashlight was that it took too long to regenerate. It happened way too often that I had to stop in the middle of the fight and run in circles until I could fight again, lol.
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 02:16 PM) I think Chapter 9 is my favourite
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 02:17 PM) Not to be spoilery, but it has some really cool locations
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:22 PM) argh that happened in the backyard part when all those ghosts regenerate! I couldn't keep up
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:22 PM) and !!!!! new locations?!
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 02:22 PM) yes! be free, my child, you are no longer stuck in the hospitals
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:24 PM) Omggg... Do the kids really need to go get their school schedule tonight and meet their teachers....?  :que:
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 02:24 PM) definitely not, education isn't that important
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 02:25 PM) < dispenser of wisdom and good advice
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:28 PM) "It'll be a real adventure on the first day, guys! Discovering the unknown!"
Eisenalex : (16 August 2018 - 02:32 PM) Are they supposed to meet their teachers before they start going to school?
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:48 PM) Yeah. Their school is different and they don't get their class schedule until tonight. GRowing up I got mine in the mail so I could call my friends and see what classes we had together.
Chou : (16 August 2018 - 02:48 PM) So tonight we go, they get their schedule and their locker #'s, and get to go and see where their classes are. Which is nice since there's only like 3 min breaks to get from one classroom to the next
GregZerO : (16 August 2018 - 04:56 PM) I need to replay FF4 and visit all those beautiful unsetting cozzy rooms again.
GregZerO : (16 August 2018 - 05:07 PM) Listening to the soundtrack again I remembered this 8 bit version of Tsukimori song a friend from school made this for me and uploaded it on youtube. https://www.youtube....h?v=k0ZlvwD2Sws
GregZerO : (16 August 2018 - 05:08 PM) not sure if i ve shared it before
midwinter : (16 August 2018 - 05:12 PM) i don't think you have! that's awesome <3

As the two function in slightly similar ways, why not compare.  Of the two places you return to regularly which feature gradual scares, which did it best?  What scares are your favourite?

And most importantly, which toilet is more mysterious: the one on the shop floor or outside the Dark Room?

Overall, I preferred the antiques shop. It's not massively exciting in terms of ghost activity, but then it fits in with the rest of the game! (Ba-dum tsh)

But really. The design is so nice. It's big! It has nice rooms, about fifty million clocks, the entire entrance has lights on every spare inch of ceiling and cups all over the place, plus a banana cheese... something on the menu. It's lovely.

Rei's house is pleasant, and nice to be in, but it doesn't really have the overall "what in the hell is this place" atmosphere that I like so much about the crazy cluttered antiques shop and Hisoka's lovely room and everything. Yuuri's little sunflower calendar. All it's really missing is something like Miku's room... but Miku is still too raw so I'll leave that thought there.

Rei's house definitely trumped it for me in terms of hauntings. I much prefer the way they use the house and just kind of subtlely stick a ghost in your kitchen, or shower, etc. I like a couple of the things in the shop (primarily your dead friends showing up, and Tall Woman on the CCTV camera is one of the top 3 moments in the game), but it all comes too all-at-once and in your face.

Plus the shop has actual boxes of tea everywhere. That helps.

Kurosawa Antiques because:

  • It is an antiques shop
  • It's also a cafe
  • It's an antiques shop and cafe that never gets a single customer in the entire game
  • Banana cheese is on the menu
  • You can see out of the windows into the garden
  • CCTV cameras
  • Full of potentially interesting junk (that sadly turns out not to be very interesting, but makes a plausible source for MacGuffins in future fic, if your inclinations run that way)
  • Yuuri's window is open at night and you can look out of it
  • It's awesome how the atmosphere varies throughout the game as the conditions change from sunset to rain to red sky at midnight and finally the drifting fog of impending oblivion
  • It is the folklore central headquarters that I have been dreaming of
  • I cannot stress enough that there are windows and you can look out of them

Granted it is a little disappointing that you can't actually go out into the garden - did they not learn their lesson about this with Osaka House? And yeah, while IMO some of the creepiest moments of the game take place there (the sound of Haruka singing when she shows up on the CCTV, people appearing in Hisoka's mirror, Ren seeing his doppelganger, Tall Womannnnn), it's sadly underused as far as scares for their own sake go. We have two radios sitting there crackling for nearly the whole game and they only get used once! Same with the phone! And it would have been so cool to be able to check the CCTV whenever you liked and sometimes get a spooky apparition that you didn't have to go and fight.

The Antiques Shop by far. Rei's house always felt more like a prison you cannot escape (like in Silent Hill 4) than a "safe heaven".

Also, Hisoka's place feels like the old times' places with clocks, antiques and friendlier interior design, while Rei's place reminded me of the typical late 1900s proletarian's gray and white, boring place.

And my grandmother has a million clocks like Hisoka, so that's a bonus point.  :D

Although the CCTV cameras are a little bit unsettling. Why is it there? If only Yuuri and Hisoka work here, and one takes requests and goes out to find missing persons or serves the customers tea (Hisoka), and the other stands behind the counter all day waiting for customers/ is cleaning the toilet, who is watching the cameras?

Or is it because Yuuri is/was suicidal? So Hisoka can make sure she does not do harm to herself?

I liked the Antique Shop more, but i'm afraid i'm biased because I love antique shops! I even wrote a fanfic about a girl working part-time at an antique shop and coming across a camera obscura. Heh heh. I love love loved the CCTV scenes which is something you wouldn't have in Rei's house. But as many have said, there are some really cool things in Rei's house which don't appear in the antique shop such as the red room/development room and the use of the telephone. One thing I was really hopingfor since Ren comes to the antique shop was something similar to what Rei and Miku do in the third game. He's a eriter so why wouldn't he be someone you would go to for a little help researching? Then they could've included more info on things such as the yomiko!

I gotta go with the antique shop. I love the layout and like the other comments, the clocks are an awesome touch. Although I do like Rei's house, and at times really creeped me out. I love the static from the radio, the rain effect on the windows in the antique shop and it feels more of a warm place. Rei's house always felt cold.
