What did everyone think of the Purifying Light and Miasma element in the last part of the game?

I had a lot of issues with how the end of FF3 went and those elements were about 40% of them.

 

It just made things unnecessarily rushed, didn't have nearly enough explanation as to why it was such a prominent thing all of a suddenly, and to those casual players who were not playing with a guide, probably a source of frustration and difficulty considering you get the bulk of the backstory plot in the last couple chapters and if you're busy running away from Reika, you tend to miss diaries and other important effects that could actually tell you what is going on.

 

The game would've been better off without it.

I fully agree with Rezz. When I first time played FF3 it was confusing and so frustrating. When I was running away from Reika I missed a lots of things (like herbals, sacred water and diaries) and that was the part of the game when I was like what's going on. :P

Backtracking was hellish with it, but the seconds between the surroundings going dark and Reika appearing are so tense.  I would have liked more candles, but I don't mind it too much.  Except when I got locked in a room with Yashuu and Reika when the candle burned out...

I think it could have been better excuted, but the idea was solid enough and it didn't give me too much trouble. They become a feature when you're like 10 hours into the game and probably somewhat hardened to what the game throws at you- the candles amp up the pressure and add a new element that you have to adapt to, making you more vulnerable to the late game scares.

 

That said, it was pretty annoying at parts and it would've been nice to take some more time exploring all the new opened up environments, but it was pretty horrifying to have your candle run out, hear that weird staticy tattoo growing noise and have your filament light up.

Agree with Rezz and Yashuu. I would have liked it to be only available in a second gameplay or in hard & nightmare mode only.

The candle show because of the door you opened release the mist to other parts of the room. Thats what I thinking that how it works?

You opened the door to where the Rift was being contained by the sacrificial pillars which released the miasma into the rest of the manor yes.

Well in every corner that there wasn't a candle that you might need later there was a save point so I felt that it was pretty balanced and it just made the game a bit harder and more stressful in an enviroment that in those last chapters you had explored for so many hours so it didn't really bother me.Honestly I don't even have a lot of memories of the "black&white Reika chase" cause I almost never let it happen.

I hated it, but I generally hate being on a time limit in games, one of the reasons I have ambivalent feelings to Majora's Mask. I mean, it is kinda like with the herbal medicine, in that they respawn in the same places every chapter, so at some point, you know where they all are and can plan your route accordingly, but I still hated being on a makeshift time limit. One of the keys elements in FF is exploration, so when you pull a stunt like this, you make the player hesitant to do so because they just wanna get it over with.

The purifying light is apart of the reason why this installment in the series is my least favorite. The limited amount of time you have with each cancel is much to short, and it has severe consequences in some cases if you aren't able to navigate around to get another one. My first play through I went around the whole end of the game trying to find a purifying light, and then once I got one I wasted half of it being chased by Reika who doesn't despawn once you get one. While I think the idea of the purifying light isn't a bad one, it was just poorly executed and really needed to have a second look at it.
