Strobe lighting and the scent of musty old books rises from within the fog...
midwinter : (22 January 2019 - 11:05 AM) yeah, there are a couple of different versions, i think
midwinter : (22 January 2019 - 11:06 AM) i tried removing the voiceover from the quiet version, and it's okayish, but it affects the music a bit too because the melody line is someone humming instead of an instrument

If I could include the games I haven't played, I'm quite sure Spirit Camera would be my choice. From what I have seen it feels more of a snack between the main line games, and even if the story is a bit interesting, it doesn't hold up to the detailed mysteries from other games. The hardware of course limits possibilities, but there are so many great 3DS games that show you don't have to lack quality despite limits, so the game falls short in comparison.

From games I HAVE played, I would have to choose the original FF2. The fixed camera angles often got me make unnecessary turns and moving was bit clumsy, and with DCB adding more to the story I don't feel need to play the original anymore outside nostalgia kicks. Also the camera system and the spirit orbs weren't exactly my thing, upgrades especially are more smooth in later games. It's still a great game, but DBC has kinda taken its place on my shelf and instead of repeating same setting I'd rather spent more time with the more recent ones~

Gameplay wise, Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.  It's fun but the random encounters are almost non existent, the combat is hold z to win, and the ghosts have way too many shared attack patterns.  Choushiro's gameplay is pretty fun but way too overpowered.  The original Fatal Frame II is far too easy but there's...a certain unique fun to it specifically that makes me enjoy it from a gameplay perspective more than 4.

Story wise however it's without a doubt Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.

Spoiler

Please let the next game have nothing like this in it.

I can't deny the game is too easy, but I do love the gameplay overall in 4. I completely agree about the lack of random encounters! The sense of dread goes down once you've played the game and realized there won't be any non-scripted attacks in your future.

Now, I haven't played Maiden of Black Water yet (still saving up for a Wii U), so my thoughts might change after then but here goes for me.

My least favorite game in the series is Deep Crimson Butterfly. It's not just that it is a rehash of another game, but the changes they made to the Wii edition were dramatic enough I can't help but view it differently. I appreciate that they added new endings, and attempted to bring more to the table with new cut-scenes during the game. The problem for me is that most of the new inserted scenes mess with the pacing and don't actually feel like they add anything of real substance to the game's narrative. As weird as this is to write, this game feels like the soap-opera version of Fatal Frame 2 to me when I play it.

There's a slow-burning darkness to the original that somehow got lost in translation for me when the game made its move to the Wii. I'm not sure if it's just the off pacing, strange character interpretations, or just the dramatically different style as a whole, probably all of those together. I do enjoy it and am glad I snagged a copy of it, but compared to all of the other games I have played in the series this entry just feels.... off.

Such order in the midst of chaos makes me woozy and disoriented.
